Statement by the Mauritanian Network for Human Rights Condemning Attacks on the Haitian Community in Springfield, Ohio
The Mauritanian Network for Human Rights stands in unequivocal solidarity with the Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio, in the face of the recent and reprehensible wave of baseless accusations and targeted attacks. These hateful actions, fueled by right-wing media outlets and anti-immigration politicians, are not only unjust but deeply damaging to the fabric of our society.
It has come to our attention that Haitian immigrants, who are integral members of the Springfield community, have been unfairly singled out and blamed for social and economic challenges. These accusations are not grounded in fact, but in xenophobia, misinformation, and the deliberate scapegoating of immigrant populations for political gain. Such rhetoric is dangerous, irresponsible, and fosters an environment of fear, discrimination, and violence.
We strongly condemn these baseless accusations and call for an immediate end to the inflammatory rhetoric that demonizes innocent people based solely on their national origin and immigrant status. The Haitian community, like all immigrant communities, contributes positively to the growth, diversity, and resilience of Springfield and the broader American society. Many Haitian immigrants have come to the United States in search of safety, stability, and the opportunity to build a better future for themselves and their families. They deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness—not as pawns in political agendas or targets of hate.
We urge local and national leaders, as well as the media, to reject and denounce the racist and xenophobic rhetoric aimed at the Haitian community. We call on law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and protection of all residents, regardless of their immigration status.
The Mauritanian Network for Human Rights reaffirms its commitment to defending the rights of all immigrant communities, and we will continue to work alongside Haitian leaders and other partners to advocate for justice, equality, and human dignity. We call on all Americans to rise above fear and division, and to embrace the values of compassion, tolerance, and inclusion that define the strength of our nation.
In solidarity,
The Mauritanian Network for Human Rights in US
